Benjamin Dicken was my 6th great grandfather. His will, filed in Halifax County, North Carolina, names all of his children, including my 5th great grandfather Richard Dicken, and a number of slaves.
Wife Anne; sons Benjamin, Lewis, Ephraim (dcd), William, Richard; daus Mary Ward, Elizabeth Wilson, Anne Lowry, Martha, Delphia. Grandson Thomas Lowry. Executors, Benjamin Lewis, William Dicken. In the name of God amen I Benjamin Dicken of Halifax County and State of North Carolina being in a low State of health but of Sound mind and memory Praise Almighty God for the same do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament.
That is to say first and principally I recommend my soul unto almighty God hopeing through the death and passion of my dear Saviour to have full and perfect pardon for all my Sins, my Body I commit to the Part to be desently Buried in hopes to rise at the reserrection of the last day to partake with my Soul, And as Touching all such Earthly Estate as God have lent to me I Giv and dispose in manner and form following—Viz
First of all it is my desire that all my Just debts should be paid by my Executors out of my Estate.
Item: I Giv and bequeath to my Daughter Mary Ward three negroes by the name of Joe (?), Rose, & Edid (Edd?) and household furniture which hath got in pofsefsion to her and her heires for Ever.
Item: I Giv and Bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth Wilson Three negroes by the name of Dinah, Martin, & Beadea and household furniture which she hath got in her pofsefsion to her and her heires for Ever.
Item: I Giv and Bequeath to my Daughter Ann Lowry(?) Two negroes by the of Tab & Simon and household furniture which she hath got in her pofsefsion to her and her heires for Ever.
Item: I Giv and Bequeath to my Daughter Martha four negroes by the names of Chania(?), Roda and Dana (Dava?) and her Choice of the negroes out of the Estate at her Mother’s Death. One feather Bed and furniture, one horse, Bridle and Sadle to her and her heires for Ever.
Item: I Giv and Bequeath to my Daughter Delphia four negroes by the names of Gild?(?), Save(?) & Simon and the second Choice of the negroes out of the Estate at her mother’s death. One feather Bed and furniture. One Bridle and Saddle to her and her heires for Ever.
Item: I Giv and Bequeath to my son Benjamin Dicken the land and plantation which he hath in pofsefsion on deep Creek an other things he hath got in possession to him and his heires for Ever.
Item: I Giv and Bequeath to my Son Lewis Dicken the land plantation that I Bought of the estate of John Alsobrook dec’d, One feather bed and furniture an Other things he hath in pofsefsion to him an his heires for Ever.
Likewise I do giv to my son Benjamin Dicken One half of the moveable Estate that did belong to his brother, Ephraim Dicken dec’d and One half of the Estate that falls to me by his Grand Mother to him and his heirs for Ever.
Likewise I do give to my son Lewis Dicken the Other halfof the moveable Estate that did belong to his brother Ephraim Dicken dec’d and the other half of the Estate that falls to me by his Grand Mother all to be Equally divided after they have settled their Brother’s debts to him and his heirs for Ever.
Item: I Giv and Bequeath to my son William Dicken all the land over the creek in Edgecombe County that did belong to my son Ephraim Dicken dec’d Except the land he Bought of Solomon Parrish One negro boy named Jerry, One Bed and furniture, One horse Bridle and Saddle and Six Sowes and pigs, the horse Bridle and Saddle and six Sowes and pigs to be furnished out of the Estate of his brother Ephraim’s by his Two Brothers Benjamin & Lewis to him and his heirs for Ever.
Item: I Giv and Bequeath to my son Richard Dicken all my land and plantation whereon I now live that is after his mother’s death. One negro Boy names Andrew, One horse Bridle and Saddle, One feather Bed and furniture, and one half of the Stock upon the plantation to have his negro his stock and Ground to work on till his Mother’s Death to him and his heirs for Ever.
Now it is my desire that all my sons should have an Equal part in Both Sayn(?) Place that is on the Creek.

I Giv and Bequeath to my Grand son Thomas Lowry One ___ of land that my son Ephraim owned on Beach Swamp to have in possession when to age of Twenty One, my son Lewis to have the use of the land but not to Cut any down except it is for rail Timber___ of age and one negro Girl names Lettice and her Increase to him and his heirs for Ever.
And to my loving wife Anne Dicken all the rest of my Estate both real and personal Being of what nature quantity or quality ___to her during her widowhood but if she should Marry or die it is my desire that it should be Equally Divided amongst all my daughters hereunto names Mary, Elizabeth, Anne, Martha and Delphia to share Equally alike.
Lastly I do constitute ordain and appoint my Three Sons Benjamin Dicken, Lewis Dicken, & William Dicken my ___sole executors of this my last Will and Testament, Revoking and disan___ all Testaments and acknowledging this an no Other to be my last Will and Testament, in Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the 24th day of November in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven hundred and ninety.
